It takes a special kind of person to be a winter sport athlete. The demands are among the highest of any athletes out there.
Sure, it’s easy for people to sit in the comfort of their home and watch the U.S. Olympic alpine or snowboard team make it look like a piece of cake as they zip down the slopes at high speeds—but what people rarely see is all the hard work and training that every one of those athletes had to put in to get to that level.
While it might look like they’re just playing in the snow all day, the reality is that winter sport athletes are some of the most dedicated and hardest working athletes in the world. Even in the summer—when there’s no snow—winter sport athletes are working hard to be ready for the next season.
Winter sports athletes need to be in peak physical condition to be able to handle the demands of their sport. They also need to have the mental toughness to be able to ski or snowboard down a mountain at high speeds, often in unpredictable and dangerous conditions.
They need to be able to produce a tremendous amount of power and force, while being extremely injury resilient. They need to be able to develop the highest level of strength possible in order to meet the demands of their sport. They must be prepared for all conditions, surfaces, and ever-changing schedules of training and competitions.
They must be able to endure the coldest of temperatures and the roughest of conditions—and still perform at their best. And they must also be flexible and resilient, as those conditions (and competitions) can change at a moment’s notice.
The programming for winter sports performance training must reflect all of these demands. It must be carefully designed in order to help them reach their peak potential while staying healthy and injury-free.
Alpine and downhill skiing are high-intensity, power-based sports. In order to be successful in these sports, athletes need to develop a high level of strength, power, and resilience. The best way to develop these qualities is through an expert-designed winter sports training program that takes into account the specific demands that these athletes face.
Training for these sports isn’t an easy task—but true winter sports athletes are up for the challenge. They know what it takes to be the best, and they are willing to put in the work necessary to get there.
For winter sports athletes who are dedicated, the rewards are immense. The satisfaction of knowing that you’ve pushed yourself to your limits and come out victorious is unlike anything else.
